Part 14

Part 14

The next morning I was abruptly woken up by the sound of the airplane Rhonda must've been working all night on. I raced over to where everyone was standing and cheering, but felt like I've been casted out of the group. Cal comes over and offers his condolences as if my marriage was dead in the water. Reonna yells out that we'll be heading out in an hour, to be on board or get left behind. Rhonda boards the plane with a few bags, I grabbed the bags that were left and headed in behind her.

"Eric, I need space and when I say space I mean stay away from me. I'll talk to you about our marriage when I'm ready, not when you're ready." Rhonda stated sitting closer to the rear of the plane.

I dropped the bags near her and took my seat as far away from her as I could. Then out of nowhere, she rushes back outside and starting throwing up. Steffanie bypassed her and whispers,

"I'm sure you can figure out what the problem is that she's having."

"I'm going to be a father?"

"I don't know, I'm just looking at the signs. When she was shot it didn't hit her in or near her stomach so it's possible. Any thing is possible."

I sat back down since she was on her way back, and behind her was Elsey carrying a big semi white painters bucket. Rhonda took her seat, Elsey sat next to her placing the bucket in the isle. Cal boarded the plane with this huge grin plastered on his face.

"Still high I see." I chuckled

"Hey man, don't judge me, judge your momma." Cal laughed in return parking himself across the isle from where I was sitting.

Steffanie and Reonna went to the cockpit and started the plane. They closed the door and I for one didn't want to be awake during this flight. I can't talk to my wife, Elsey seems to be keeping her company so that leaves me to catch a few winks before we needed to refill and continue on our way to the final destination. Looking out the window in hopes of finding some type of peace, instead I see four Hummers coming our way.

"We gotta go, we gotta go, they're coming." I held out frantically.

I yelled at Elsey to get Rhonda on the floor. I pulled Cal out of his seat so he's also not looking at a bullet coming his way. I yell out again that we needed to go. They were coming and coming fast. Running to the cockpit I busted in to let them know that in less than a minute we were going to be under attack. Reonna told me to hold on, put the plane in motion, and off we went down the airstrip. The only question running through my mind is, if we are going to have enough time and speed to take off, or will this be our final resting place.

I have no clue what they did or how they did it but within seconds of us taking off down the strip we were slowly taking flight. I can hear gun fire coming from behind us, I turned to look, and there was Rhonda laying in the floor screaming and reaching for me. I wasn't supposed to move but she's calling for me and I would be an idiot if I didn’t run to her aid.

"I'm here, I got you." As I blanketed her with myself, trying to catch any bullet that could potentially harm her.

After so long, the plane leveled off, the turbulence, and gun fire was a distant memory. I lifted myself off of Rhonda, helped her back in her seat, then walked back to sit near Cal. She called me out of fear, not because she's ready to talk about us. The last thing I plan to do with anyone, is to play house. All in all, I feel like I deserve an apology for even having to be bothered with something so stupid and trivial.
