Part 17
I told Cal to drop it because we both need to stay focused on getting to the island. He told me again how they had the information with them but I told him not to worry about it, just let me know when he needs to rest. We walked in silence until the sun started to depart from us. We set up camp, I hunted a few rabbits and picked berries while Cal rested up. After we ate dinner, we took turns napping while the other kept look out.
"Get up, we have movement." Cal whispered
Behind us I heard three sets of footsteps but only one person breathing, hard. I grabbed the bag and threw Cal over my shoulder and ran off in the direction we were heading initially. If I can make it deeper in the woods I can put Cal down somewhere safe and pick them off one at a time, killing the heavier of the three last since he's not that big of a threat, no pun intended. I heard one gunshot and felt a warm liquid run down my back. I got Cal to a safer place in the woods, propped him against the tree, and saw the bullet hole right through the side of his head.
They split up, trying to corner me in. As much as I didn't want to leave him there, I had no other choice. Checked him over for any weapons I could use since the only ammo and guns I have is in my bag, and we used 500 rounds of that already. Instead of finding a bunch of guns, there was one 9mm, five full magazines, and six grenades. I pulled the keys to all six and took off into the night. I maybe made it 150 yards before the explosion and I'm hoping it took out at least two of these head hunters.
The blast was powerful, to give me a ringing sound in my ears and slightly knock me off my feet. There was nothing and I mean nothing that was going to allow me to stop and give up, I just need to make it to the inner city, and I'll be half way to my destination. I must've ran the rest of the way because by the time I slowed down I was in the town of Shubuta. I searched around for a motel, there was a total of four with within a three block radius. I picked the one in between the three. This way I'll hear them coming before they make it here.
I checked in, cash, no identification needed. Went to my room and pulled out the Unicorn File to make sure it was all there, and it was. I looked at the information for the island and I had that too. I guess they thought I dropped this bag with the others. Shame on them!
